Biography

Selim Hanay received his Ph.D. degree in Physics from Caltech in 2011. He has than worked at Caltech Physics Department first as a post-doctoral research fellow and then as a research scientist. His early research has focused on Nano Electromechanical Systems (NEMS), working in the group of Professor Michael Roukes. With his colleagues, they have developed NEMS devices capable of detecting and weighing single protein molecules in real time. These research results have been highlighted in several media outlets, such as the New York TimesIEEE Spectrum,Scientific AmericanDiscover Magazine and Slashdot.

His current research will focus on further advancing these nanoscale machines to accomplish unprecedented sensing and characterization modalities for biologic samples at the single-molecule and single-cell level. These investigations have immense potential in biochemical research (such as proteomics and cancer studies) as well as environmental applications (such as monitoring of air pollution and nanotoxicity).

Recently, Hanay research group started working on the nonlinear dynamics of nanomechanical systems, as resonant sensors as well as buckling systems. Buckling systems have the potential to work as efficient nanomechanical actuators owing to the large displacement amplitudes easily reached after buckling bifurcation.

Starting around 2018,  Hanay research group has also been developing microwave sensors operating inside microfluidic systems for the characterization of single cells and microparticles.
